The AI4Teams lab is based at the Department of Information and Computing Sciences, Utrecht University. Our mission is to improve the way people work together through technology. We research AI solutions that facilitate, optimize and scale team formation and teamwork in various settings, including education, innovation, and business. We employ an interdisciplinary approach to our AI design, combining insights from computational sciences, as well as social sciences and humanities.
Among the topics we investigate are:
Team formation algorithms: how to design algorithms that help form better teams, in terms of performance, member well-being, and sustainability? Depending on the setting, we design algorithms that assist decision-making in a top-down, bottom-up, or hybrid manner.
Self-organized teams and team formation agency: What is the role of agency in team formation? How can technology empower users to form their best collaborations in a self-organized manner? How can we design AI that gives users control over teamwork processes while ensuring team performance?
Human-AI collaboration: What roles can AI play in augmenting human teams?
Collaborative innovation: How can technology strengthen the innovation capacity of teams and help them think better outside the box? The majority of the tasks our algorithms are designed to optimize are creative, ill-structured, and open-ended.
Collaborative intelligence: How can we design systems that leverage collaboration to perform better than either humans or machines alone?
